DILATORS ARE GENERALLY USED:
- After medical treatments or conditions adhesions or scarring can form within the rectum and anal canal (such as after any surgical procedures, surgery, radiotherapy or after childbirth).
- To reduce spasms/clamping of pelvic floor muscles.
- To help stretch scarring
- To assist in retraining the technique to open your bowels
A typical dilator program involves inserting a dilator that is comfortable yet applies some pressure/stretch. Dilators can be used daily (for approx. 10 mins) while doing relaxation techniques. After this a self-stretching program and scar tissue massage can be performed. The goal is to insert the largest size dilator that you need to accommodate to gain function. Dilators can be used in the bath and cleaned with warm soapy water Please follow the advice of your health professional.
A quality lubricant is recommended to use with the dilators such as Pjur woman silicone or Uberlube. If using silicone lubricant, you must wash the dilators well after each use.
