WHAT IS A TENS MACHINE AND HOW DOES IT WORK?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation hence it is so much easier to call it TENS!
 
TENS is a fantastic non medicated form of pain relief for labour, which is safe for you and your baby.
A TENS machine is a small battery-operated unit with a clip and neck strap. This allows you to carry the machine around with you, so you can stay active during labour. The machine is really powerful. Through 4 pads attached to your back, small electric pulses are sent to prevent pain signals from reaching your brain. The pads are positioned over the nerve pathways that transmit pain messages from the uterus and cervix during labour. (See pictures).
 
The pulses also stimulate your body to release endorphins, they are your 'feel happy' hormones. These endorphins interact with the receptors in the brain to reduce the perception of pain and act comparably to drugs such as morphine and codeine.
 
TENS is a safe and effective way to manage pain during labour and help you avoid complications and side effects from other forms of pain relief.
 
The sensation you feel on the skin is a buzzy tingling. You decide the intensity level by pushing up or down the buttons on the machine. Use the boost button to quickly increase the intensity for when you have a contraction.
 
Our TENS machines are hired from 37 weeks pregnant and due back within 2 weeks after your expected due date (some flexibility is allowed for overdue babies etc).

The hire form needs to be filled out and payment made before pick up. Credit card payment is preferred so I can easily refund you the deposit once the machine is returned.
 
The hire fee is $80 which includes the machine hire, electrode pads, batteries and instruction manual.
 
Plus an $80 deposit is required and is fully refundable if machine and accessories are returned within three weeks of due date and in perfect working order.
 
Total cost of $160 (includes refundable deposit).

SAFETY WHEN USING A TENS MACHINE:
TENS should not be used in the bath or in the shower.
TENS should not be used on broken skin.
TENS should not be used whilst driving a car.
TENS should not be used prior to the 37th week of your pregnancy unless advised by your doctor, midwife or physiotherapist.
TENS must be turned off before applying or removing the electrodes.
Seek advise if you are epileptic.
